Wieland Eggermond
Attaignant has a new manager/agent! Wieland Eggermond, lomg-standing artistic director of RASA, the famous world music podium in Utrecht, has taken on the Attignant Consort. We have spent many pleasurable hours thinkng about the best contexts and locations for performances of renaissance music, at a time when many concert venues and festivals are reducing their operations and are often afraid of programming anything but the most mainstream repertoire. How can the intimate, subtle, poetic music of the 15th and 16th centuries remain relevant to a generation of listeners that have music from every age, every genre and every corner of the globe available to them? Wieland’s passionate love of this music, and of the renaissance flute, together with his vast experience of music from many countries and traditions, make him a wonderful guide and promoter for us. We are very much looking forward to a fruitful collaboration with him!

2 Attaignant CDs in the pipeline!
There are now 2 Attaignant CDs in the pipeline. Kate Clark and Nigel North have already recorded a duo CD with pieces for early and late renaissance flutes and lite, and for early baroque flute, and theorbo, which will be released in january 2012. This recording includes divisions pieces from the 16th century, ricercars and fantasias from the early 17th and “airs de cour” from the mid 17th and early 18th centuries., It also features the first modern day performance, to our knowledge, on (a copy of) the one surviving flute by Richard Haka (1645-1705). The Dutch maker, Simon Polak, and I were able to visit together the Ehrenfeld collection which contains this flute, on several occasions. The instrument is in perfect condition and is certainly one of the most beautiful and remarkable futes I have ever played. A detailed article about the instrument will be available soon on my renaissance website www.renaissanceflute.net. If you would like to hear a sample track from the CD click here (forthcoming)
How long did the renaissnace flute consort continue to exist? How long did the renaissance flute in its perfect simplicity contune to be used? From 23-26 May 2011 the ensemble will record a second consort CD, with music for flutes from the early 17th century and ending with early baroque music for two and three flutes. Photos of the recording in action will be posted during those days. With this CD we would like to present our own tentative answer to these questions.
For this CD the Attaignant consort will use a consort of flutes by Giovanni Tardino at 408 hz. We are most grateful to a anonymous patron – a musician, music lover, and believer in the great power of music – for helping us to purchase this consort of new flutes! We hope you will agree that this has introduced wonderful new colours into the “pallette” of the Attaignant Consort.
